Disability Awareness Afternoon

The children at Kennett CP School enjoyed a week based on the ‘Mantle of the Expert’.  This is a dramatic inquiry based approach to teaching and learning. As part of this week a Disability Awareness afternoon was held to help the children consider including arrangements for people with disabilities in their thinking and planning linked to their inquiries.

Ten activities where the children could experience the effects of various disabilities were arranged and the children moved round them in small mixed aged groups. Sandra and Graham, visitors from Guide dogs for the Blind association, along with Edward the guide dog, gave the children a chance to experience various sight disorders by wearing special glasses while trying to do everyday activities.

Sandy Holmes the school hearing support worker used head phones to give the children experience of hearing disorders. The children also did a risk assessment of the school for a wheelchair user, painted using their feet and tried to draw simple shapes while looking in a mirror.

Everybody felt the afternoon had been worthwhile and the children said that they had learnt how hard it is for people with disabilities to carry out everyday tasks. The next day the younger children were carrying forward their learning, by making models of ramps to the swimming pool for wheelchair users where ‘Talking Ted’ was staying on his holiday in France as part of their project!
